An Overview of Technology Management
Technology is the collective term for many things, including information systems, information technology, computer sciences, and engineering. It includes many fields of endeavor, like telecommunications, information technology, and manufacturing to name a few. Information technology also includes computer sciences, which are an extension of information technology, and the application of computer software to accomplish specific tasks. The application of technology in the broadest sense is utilized to develop new products and services that have an effect on society. Technology results in both tangible items like machinery, appliances, and devices, as well as intangible goods like information.
Technology is the total collection of skills, techniques, and tools used in the achievement of specific goals, like scientific research, applied research, or in the manufacturing of physical products or services. In the broadest sense technology can be used to describe any process in which information is processed or changed in some way. Processes used to deliver information include advertising, education, communications, and government to provide services. Technicians help businesses and organizations implement technology. They are responsible for laying out the information system, designing and maintaining the communications links, implementing the technologies, training users and providing support.
Information technology planning is the process by which future technologies are chosen to meet the needs of the marketplace. Choosing an area of growth requires an assessment of what technologies are currently available and what will be most useful to society. Planning can be implemented at both national and local levels. Sometimes the knowledge base that develops through research and technology assessment processes is so extensive that it actually drives the decision. Other times a decision is made after consulting the technology planning team and individuals involved in implementing technology.
Information technology management is planning, implementing, operating, and maintaining information technology systems. These systems allow users to process and transmit information in a cost effective manner that meets the changing needs of businesses and society as a whole. Information technology management includes the development of information technology systems, hardware and software, networks and servers, workstations, and user equipment. These systems have many roles and responsibilities and include business process management, business intelligence analysis, e-commerce, networked computing, project management, networking, application solution management, software implementation, system evaluation and design, and testing.
Technology investments are vital to any business, whether they are technology driven or not. Research shows that technology investments are increasing at a rapid pace, driven largely by demand from businesses and consumers. The advances in technology are creating new and different job types. Employment opportunities in information technology are expected to grow faster than average over the next decade.
There are two main components involved in information technology management. The first component is technology; technology that enhances information and enhances business systems. The second component is information technology professionals. This workforce consists of people who perform these roles. There are many people who are interested in this field. With the increasing need for information technology professionals, more colleges and universities are introducing degree programs that focus on information technology management.
